ACAR Art Prize 2026
My work ‘Light and shadow (Huangshan)’ 136x183cm has been selected as a finalist in the inaugural ACAR Art Prize. The ACAR Prize is “designed to honour artistic excellence and to recognize artists who are outstanding advocates for Australia-China cultural exchange”. The Prize runs from 18 April – 1 August 2026 at the ACAR Gallery St Leonards, Sydney
My artist statement: The artwork ‘Light and shadow (Huangshan)’ was inspired by several artist residencies in Hong Kong and China. In 2014 and 2015 I travelled to Huangshan and Zhangjiajie courtesy of the Nock Art Foundation. I painted plein air in those famous landscapes, so strongly defined by the Chinese brush painting tradition. I continued with work inspired by Chinese landscape in Hong Kong studio residencies and then on and off over subsequent years in my Blue Mountains studio.
My interest in the Chinese brush painting tradition goes back to 1996; my MFA (research Masters) attempted to place my artist practice as a synthesis of a western expressionist and abstract expressionist tradition with an alternate way of working that emphasised stillness, emptiness and a meditative approach. This approach aligned with the philosophy of Chinese brush painting and has been an ongoing interest of mine ever since.

En Plein Air at Artspace Mackay
Fifteen years in the creating and two years in the planning, this major exhibition at Artspace Mackay features nine artists and almost 200 artworks. Curated by Nathan Schroeder and featuring; Tim Allen, Rhett Brewer, Julia Griffin KIng, Michelle Hungerford, Chris Langlois, Euan Macleod, Ron McBurnie, Charmaine Pike and Bradley Short. The exhibition runs from 26 September – 14 December 2025 at Artspace Mackay.

KAAF Art Prize 2025
I’m very happy to find out that I have been selected as a finalist in the KAAF Art Prize 2025 with my work ‘Becalmed (glacial lake)’ 80x110cm, ink, watercolour, pastel, charcoal on paper. The award runs from 21st November 2025 to 16th January 2026 at the Korean Cultural Centre Gallery

Reciprocity Exhibition
Reciprocity Exhibition at Hazelhurst Regional gallery
It was wonderful to finally hang our collaborative exhibition ‘Reciprocity’ at Hazelhurst Regional gallery. After being reprogrammed from 2020 due to Covid it was great to see it on the walls. Unfortunately it was then on display for just one day before the 2nd Sydney lockdown came into effect. Oh well. It’s been a creative and absorbing process, working on collaborative pieces with a ceramicist – and watching the other painter/ceramicist collaborations evolve. It’s got me keen to do more painting on ceramics, I’m looking to add some large pieces into my next solo show.

A great selection of artists in the show: Kiata Mason, Louisa Chircop, Charmaine Pike, Ann Thomson, Mirra Whale, Natalya Shinn, Hayley West, Jean McGhee and Agatha Pupaher. Curated by Caitlin Casey. Also, Gareth Jenkins along with Apothecary Archive have produced an excellent 50 page book to complement the exhibition; with process works, writing and behind the scenes photos documenting the whole 6 months of the collaboration.
